Harry Potter author, JK Rowling, announced she was “genuinely happy” to have Johnny Depp continue his role in the Fantastic Beasts series despite the rumors surrounding the actor.
The veteran actor has been in the news recently after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, accused him of domestic abuse. Rowling admitted that the recasting was considered after the news first hit the media.
However, she stated that she was now “comfortable” to have him stay on as Gellert Grindelwald.
Depp donned the role of dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald for the first movie adaptation titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The movie was released in 2016 and received rave reviews.
Since then, Rowling has authored a number of screenplays for the spin off films, the second of which is set to hit theaters next year.
Speaking of the choice for Grindelwald Rowling stated, “When Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald, I thought he’d be wonderful in the role. However, around the time of filming his cameo in the first movie, stories had appeared in the press that deeply concerned me and everyone most closely involved in the franchise.”
She went on to state that a number of Harry Potter fans had “legitimate questions and concerns” regarding the choice. She pointed out that the rumors caused Harry Potter director David Yates to reconsider the decision to cast Depp.
She added that she understood why some people were “angry” that the recast did not take place.
She expressed great sorrow over her own inability to express her views with the vast legion of Harry Potter fans who have shown outrage at the decision.
However, despite the apologies, she stated she was firmly supportive of seeing Depp reprise his role as Gellert Grindelwald.
