Football club Manchester United could make their way to the Champions League knockout stages after their win against Benfica. It would be the club’s first trip to the League after a dry spell of almost four years.
United earned their place on the backs of their Europa League win last season. So far, they have claimed four victories from their first Group A games. They now need a single point from the two remaining games to progress.
Commenting on media hype, the club’s manager Jose Mourinho preached patience. He stated, “We have not qualified yet…We must get that point from the two remaining matches.”
He added that he was extremely happy with the results they had achieved so far.
Mourinho also told reporters that the club had faced some obstacles in their line-up. They had eventually resorted to playing a “kid” from the academy, Scott McTominay.
The Red Devils certainly had to work to earn their win against Benfica. Benfica’s goalkeeper Mile Svilar saved a two major goals from United’s Romelu Lukaku.
He did not porve as lucky with Benfica’s ex-midfielder, Nemanja Matic. Matic hit a powerful shot which struck the foot of the post. However, the ball managed to ricochet off the Benfica goalkeeper and straight into the net.
This score was added to by United’s full-back Daley Blind who scored from a penalty spot.
Benfica did however manage to improve from the reverse game. They displayed a better game this time around, even forcing United goalkeeper, David de Gea to make two saves in each half.
Manchester United now faces a trip to Basel, scheduled for next month. This will be followed by their final group game at home which will be against CSKA. If the club performs well they will go through to round 16 of the League.
United last played at this stage in 2014 when they were under the tutelage of David Moyes.
