Ronaldo bags Best Player at Fifa Awards
Ronaldo says second Fifa award win is a great moment

Portuguese football star, Cristiano Ronaldo was named the world’s best male player at the 2017 Best Fifa Football Awards in London.

The Real Madrid player beat Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Paris St-Germain’s Neymar to bag the honor. 32 year old Ronaldo received the honor after leading Real Madrid to a Champions League-La Liga double in 2016-17.

This is the second edition of the Best Fifa Football Awards. Earlier, the football community endorsed the Ballon d’Or. That particular award was conferred by France Football magazine since 1956.

However, football’s governing body has since terminated its association with the honor. As of January 2017, the Ballon d’Or has been replaced by the Best Fifa Football Awards.

The voting in the event takes place through national team captains, manager, and selected journalists. This particular round was also open to an online poll by fans. Each section accounted for 25% of the total vote.

The honor is just another feather in Ronaldo’s cap. The player has already claimed the inaugural Best Fifa Football Award in January 2017.

Speaking of the victory at the London Palladium he said, “We are in England for the first time and I win it for the second consecutive time.” He added that it was a great personal moment for him.

Other winners of the awards include Lieke Martens of Barcelona and the Netherlands, who won the best female player.

The position of best men’s coach was claimed by Real Madrird’s Zinedine Zidane. Best female coach went to the Netherlands’ Sarina Wiegman.

Other awards distributed include the Pushkas award for the best goal of 2017. This was given to Arsenald’s Olivier Giroud for his ‘scorpion kick’ against Crystal Palace in January 2017.

Celtic won the fan award after they honored the club’s 1967 ‘Lisbon Lions’ with a spectacular 360-degree card display. The display was created in honor of the club’s 50th European Cup win anniversary.
