Elon Musk unveiled his plans to curtail travel time and send humans on Mars by 2024. The tech giant made the announcement at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) meeting held on September 29, 2017, in Australia.
Musk’s company, SpaceX, is developing a huge spacecraft to inhabit Mars. Within the next five years, life support, construction, and mining equipment will be made available on the Red planet.
The astronauts sent to Mars in 2024, will then build the foundation for the first ever Martian outpost.
Musk also announced his intentions of unveiling an updated version of the Interplanetary Transport System. The SpaceX fleet, also known as BFR, will be a redesign of the original cabin and booster.
The enormous BFR, built with a sleek design, will have the capacity to accommodate 100 people per rocket. The BFR will serve in building a foundation on the moon. The facility will be used to test the skills and technology required to develop a successful Martian colony.
In addition to the Moon and Mars travel missions, Musk plans to use the innovative technology to transport people on Earth. With SpaceX’s successful development, most journeys on the planet will be completed within 30 minutes. The travel time will not exceed an hour.
The rocket can travel at speeds as high as 28,968 km/h. A video displayed a simulation of passengers boarding the rocket in New York and landing in Shanghai. According to the promises made by SpaceX, the distance will be covered in 37 minutes.
