Football favorites Argentina may not compete in World Cup 2018. The team, which is captained by FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi, had a tough time in the qualifying rounds.
The team managed only a 0-0 draw in their qualifying match against Peru on Thursday, October 5. They are currently at the sixth position in the 10 team South American category. Only the top four teams would be guaranteed spots at Russia, 2018.
Argentina are no strangers to the Cup having won the title twice. They have, however struggled for goals in the qualifiers. The team have managed to score only one goal in their past three matches.
Some of this struggle may be attributed to the constant change in leadership. In recent times Argentina has switched coaches three times.
The current coach, Jorge Sampaoli, is optimistic despite their weak position. In a statement he said, “I remain confident we’ll be in the World Cup. It would really be unfair if a group that put it all out there-like they did-does not advance.”
It would certainly be unfair to team captain Lionel Messi. The football star is likely to play in the World Cup for the final time. Despite numerous individual accolades, Messi is yet to deliver a major trophy for Argentina.
However, Argentina has no reason to give up hope until now. They have one final qualifier against Ecuador in Quito on Tuesday, October 10.
Speaking to the press about the final, nerve racking match, Sampaoli said, “If we confront it with the conviction that we had against Peru, we will win at Ecuador.”
Fans however, must hope that conviction will be enough to take their team to the coveted Cup.
