Liverpool F.C. coach, Jurgen Klopp is furious over defensive woes after the 2-0 defeat against Leicester City. Reds slumped in the third round of Carabao Cup at the King Power Stadium on September 19, 2017.
Liverpool crashed out after goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani in the second half secured victory for The Foxes. Recently, the Merseyside club had received a lot of criticism from fans and football experts for letting teams off the hook.
Klopp outlined the fact that it doesn’t matter who plays better in the first half. He criticized the way his team conceded two goals and failed to reach the next round.
“After the first goal you saw the heads from Leicester went up, that was a bigger difference,” said Klopp. “But that we concede like this, that makes me really, really sick.”
Commenting on fans’ fury over Phillipe Coutinho substitution at the half-time, Klopp revealed that he always had a plan to substitute him at the half. The visitors dominated the game in the first half against Leicester, but they could not maintain their dominance in the second half following the Brazilian star’s substitution.
Reds legend, John Aldridge said that Liverpool probably needs two center-backs in next 12 months. Problems are arising from both ends of the pitch, defensive and attacking. He outlined defensive problems, stating that there are no leaders at the back. The defensive line up needs to play as a unit and communicate. Commenting on attacking miscues, he highlighted that Sadio Mane and Mohammad Salah’s presence influence the game. But he expressed the need to have a striker who can put ball in back of the net all the time.
Klopp expressed belief in his side, stating we are a good football team though it doesn’t seem that way at the moment.
If defensive problems continue for Reds, it would be difficult to advance in the Premier League and other competitions.
