Piyush Goyal, who was formerly the Minister of State with independent charge for power, coal, new and renewable energy, was commissioned to the cabinet rank in the latest reshuffle ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.
Known for his immaculate record of service, especially handling the coal block auctions and curbing domestic imports, Goyal was the best that could be done, reports said.
The outgoing Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had offered to step down from his post last month following a spate of train derailments. A beleaguered Prabhu, who had taken the “moral responsibility” for the unfortunate incidents had not attended office after August 23, after he met Narendra Modi.
The outgoing minister congratulated Goyal and other Union Ministers who were promoted to the cabinet rank. He also thanked the Railways family for their support.
However, senior railway officials said that taking over the Railways at this crucial juncture could be challenging for the new minister before the forthcoming general elections.
Goyal not only has to render several of Modi’s dream projects like electrification, bullet trains, and green corridors, but also eliminate accidents substantially. He also has to find ways to do all this without rise in cost and at the same time boost revenues, they added.
Goyal praising the outgoing minister said, Prabhu’s roadmap focused on investment, security, and consumer utilities. All this has turned the Railways into a vibrant organization.
Prabhu while speaking to the media said he believed Goyal would do a better job than him in the present responsibility. He added, He (Goyal) will play a big role in the progress of the country. He wished the new minister success for the new responsibilities, and also urged everyone to continue offering their support.
